1: Dover to Poole, 8th/9th June
Shipping Forecast: 8th June 05.20: Dover, Wight: S or SE 3 or 4 occasionally 5 becoming variable 3 later; rain then showers; moderate or poor
We departed from our over winter berth in the Wellington Dock at Dover, refuelled, and cleared the western entrance pier heads at 09.40 on the 8th June into grey and uninviting conditions and an awkward sea, though the forecast southerly wind allowed us nearly to lay Dungeness.
The wind later veered heading us so that a tack became necessary to clear that point though by way of compensation the sky cleared and the sun came out. Shortly after that the wind died away and the remainder of the passage, apart from resumption of sail for a few
hours between Hastings and Beachy Head was completed under
power.
